Is Forbrain right for me?
Certainly. Forbrain is suitable from 3 years old to adult (with some exceptions – please see details in this section). The voice and the ear plays an important role in our ability to communicate. Forbrain is used in a personal developmental approach (public speaking, improvement of the spoken and singing voice) and also as a therapeutic approach to help people with more severe disorders.
What are the main improvements that I can expect?
Your progress will be dependent on several factors, such as, your particular difficulty, your demographic (sex, age, etc.) and your use of Forbrain.
There are two main benefits to Forbrain:
- The first benefit is immediate. Since Forbrain changes your perception, you are able to adjust your voice naturally and instantly. This adjustment will help better integrate the information that you receive while using the headset.
- The second benefit will be in the medium term. Forbrain is used like any teaching and pedagogical tool. The goal is not to replace, or compensate, the natural process of how your brain listens and produces sounds (auditory feedback) but rather to teach your brain to fully use the process
Can I use Forbrain as a complement to a conventional therapy?
Of course. Forbrain operates autonomously and can be used between sessions to reinforce the work you do with a therapist. In other words, Forbrain doesn’t replace the therapy, it complements it. The therapy is usually a long term approach; Forbrain optimizes the work done during therapy.
Is Forbrain useful if I don’t have any auditory issues (Auditory Processing Disorders)?
Good question! Listening is the processing of sound information by your ear and your brain. We say that it is a "passive" cognitive faculty. While improving your faculty via passive treatment, you are also engaged in an active phase through speech. You issue a sound, perceive your voice differently, and adjust your voice according to the perception. This is the same principle found in the audio-vocal loop that goes beyond the passive part of hearing. It explains why Forbrain can be used in a wide array of applications such as Attention, Speech, Reading and Memory.
How should I position the Forbrain’s headset?
A step-by-step user manual is supplied with the headset. Turn the headphones on and place the hoop behind your head. Then, position the bone conduction membranes in front of the ears (in contact with your check bones). Make sure your ears are unobstructed and can perceive sound. Finally, place the microphone 1.2 inches (3 cm) in front of the mouth. Now speak, recite, make a speech, sing, hum – the first time using Forbrain is always amazing!
What will I hear once the Forbrain’s headset is in position?
You will hear your voice, but differently – as if it was modulated. To listen to the effect that it provides with these 2 audio samples:
- Listen to a voice without Forbrain
- Listen to a voice with Forbrain
- Listen to a voice without Forbrain
Do I only read aloud with Forbrain?
No. Reading aloud is a good exercise but you can also sing, repeat recorded texts, talk with another person, tell stories, or recite a text or a lesson. Your voice is the source of Forbrain’s functionality. You should enjoy using it and have fun!
Can I use Forbrain alone?
Yes. For children under 6, adult supervision is required.
Do you provide exercises to do with Forbrain?
We provide advice on exercises and how to properly sit down to optimize the use of the headset. Click here to learn more. However, we do not provide materials such as written exercises because use needs to be based on your individual difficulty and demographic (sex, age, etc.). However, some therapists were kind enough to share with us the exercises they use. You can find them here.
Can I use Forbrain for several hours in a row?
No, it is not recommended. Forbrain is a stimulating teaching tool. Prolonged use can make you tired and become counterproductive.
Can I use Forbrain on a regular basis? For several months?
Like any training and learning, Forbrain exercises should be repeated and sustained in order to be effective and assimilated. There is no limit to the usage of Forbrain over time, especially if you are trying to perfect yourself. The ideal training program will alternate periods of use for approximately 10 weeks including rest periods during which your brain learns to function without the help of the device. Are there any contraindications?
Forbrain is a painless and noninvasive sensory stimulation apparatus. Like any stimulation, Forbrain can excite and tire the user during the sessions. Forbrain is not suitable for:
- Children under 3 years
- For people with Parkinson's disease
- People with hearing loss in both ears of 80%
- People carrying a Cochlear Implant
- People with epilepsy (except on advice of a specialist)
